Every TTC zone consists of exactly four components in sequence from the driver's approach direction:

Buffer space provides a safety zone between the traffic and the work space. There are two types:
Longitudinal Buffer Space
Located BETWEEN the downstream end of the merging taper and the beginning of the work space. Runs parallel to traffic flow.
Based on Stopping Sight Distance (Table 6C-2)
Lateral Buffer Space
Located BETWEEN the edge of the traffic lane and the work space. Runs perpendicular to traffic flow. Width determined by engineering judgment.

When one lane of a two-lane road must be closed, traffic alternates using the remaining lane. Four methods are permitted:

Detour
Routes traffic onto an entirely different road to bypass the work zone. May use local streets or alternate highways.
- DETOUR sign with arrow required
- Must verify route can handle diverted traffic (weight limits, width)
- Return to original route must be clearly signed
- Notify affected property owners and businesses
Diversion
Routes traffic through a temporary roadway within or adjacent to the normal roadway (e.g., across a median, temporary bypass road).
- Often used for bridge/structure work
- Temporary surface must be adequate for traffic
- Clear signing at both ends
- Drainage must be addressed
Pedestrian Considerations (6D.02โ6D.03)
- Pedestrians with disabilities must be accommodated โ ADA compliance is MANDATORY
- A clearly delineated and usable travel path must be provided at all times
- Prior to closing a sidewalk, users must be notified in advance
- Alternate pedestrian routes must be signed
- Detectable edging (curbing or barriers) must be provided for visually impaired
- Temporary ramps must meet ADA slope requirements (max 1:12)
- Pedestrian channelizing devices shall be stable and detectable
- Overhead clearance minimum: 8 feet for pedestrian paths

Intersections are among the most complex TTC scenarios because they involve multiple approaches and conflicting movements.
Work on One Intersection Approach (Figure 6H-6)
